Sophia McNamara Lawyer

Sophia is a lawyer in our Corporate & Commercial team, and specialises primarily in food and beverage and other areas of regulatory compliance applying to the fast-moving consumer goods sector.

Sophia’s expertise includes:

  • product classification and finding the right pathway to market (eg food, therapeutic good or cosmetic)
  • the Food Standards Code, including label and recipe compliance and classification of ingredients and potential novel foods
  • the Australian Consumer Law, particularly the assessment of marketing and advertising material for risk of misleading and deceptive conduct
  • liquor licensing
  • the Australian biosecurity import conditions (BICON) system and requirements for importing food products and other goods into Australia
  • the therapeutic goods regulatory framework, including advertising and labelling requirements for therapeutic goods and ingredients permitted in listed and registered medicines
  • requirements for importing or manufacturing products which contain industrial chemicals (such as cosmetics) under the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS), and
  • regulatory considerations involved with hazardous chemicals or dangerous goods, including compliance with the Poisons Standard, State and Territory Occupational Health & Safety legislation and the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road & Rail.

Sophia also has a keen interest in policy and enjoys having the opportunity to draft submissions to legislative inquiries and other regulatory reform processes.

Prior to joining KHQ in 2021, Sophia worked for the Victorian Government Department of Justice & Community Safety. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) from Monash University.
